Статья написана в 1841 году и предназначалась для задуманной Белинским «Критической истории русской литературы». Белинский ставит здесь с большой глубиной вопрос о сущности художественной формы и содержания. Его учение направлено против формализма и плоского эмпиризма. Белинский не закончил статью и остановился как раз на определении идеи искусства, но он его дал в ряде других статей, в которых уже окончательно порвал связь с гегелевской эстетикой.
